TPMS Explained: What That Tire Pressure Warning Light Really Means
What Is TPMS?
TPMS stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System — a safety system required on all passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. since 2008. Its job is simple: alert you when one or more of your tires drops significantly below the recommended inflation pressure. When that happens, a warning light — shaped like a cross-section of a tire with an exclamation point — lights up on your dashboard.
Why Tire Pressure Matters
Driving on under-inflated tires is one of the most common and preventable causes of tire failure. Low tire pressure leads to:
- Reduced fuel efficiency — under-inflated tires create more rolling resistance, which means your engine works harder
- Uneven and accelerated tread wear — the edges of the tire wear faster, shortening tire life
- Overheating — under-inflated tires flex more and generate excess heat, which can cause a blowout
- Poor handling and braking — especially in wet or emergency situations
The TPMS light is your early warning system. Don't ignore it.
Two Types of TPMS
Direct TPMS
Direct TPMS uses physical pressure sensors mounted inside each wheel (typically on the valve stem). These sensors transmit real-time pressure readings to your vehicle's computer. Direct TPMS is more accurate and tells you exactly which tire is low, often displayed on your dashboard screen.
Indirect TPMS
Indirect TPMS doesn't use physical pressure sensors. Instead, it monitors wheel rotation speed through your ABS (Anti-lock Braking System). An under-inflated tire has a slightly smaller diameter and rotates faster — the system detects this difference and triggers the warning light. It's less precise than direct TPMS and doesn't tell you which specific tire is low.
When the TPMS Light Comes On
Solid TPMS Light
A steady TPMS light means one or more tires are 25% or more below the recommended pressure. Check all four tires with a tire pressure gauge and inflate to the pressure listed on the sticker inside your driver's door jamb (not the number on the tire sidewall — that's the maximum pressure). After inflating, the light should go off within a few minutes of driving.
Flashing TPMS Light
A TPMS light that blinks for about 60–90 seconds and then stays on usually indicates a fault with the TPMS system itself — not necessarily a tire pressure problem. This can happen when a sensor battery dies (sensors typically last 5–10 years), or after replacing tires without resyncing the sensors. Have the system inspected by a tire professional.
TPMS and New Tires
When you have new tires mounted, it's important that your installer properly handles the TPMS sensors. Key things to know:
- Direct TPMS sensors should be inspected and the service kit (valve stem, seal, and nut) replaced with each tire change to prevent leaks
- After mounting new tires, the TPMS system may need to be reset or re-learned to recognize the sensors
- If a sensor is damaged during mounting, it will need to be replaced — typically $50–$100 per sensor
- Aftermarket wheels may require TPMS sensors to be purchased and installed separately
Maintaining Proper Tire Pressure
The TPMS light triggers at 25% below recommended pressure — but you shouldn't wait until then. Best practice is to check your tire pressure once a month and before any long road trip. Remember that pressure changes approximately 1 PSI for every 10°F change in temperature, so tires often read low on the first cold morning of fall or winter.
